The chocolate spearheader, Mars, launched the 2025 Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant, inviting submissions until October 26, 2024. This grant supports innovative research and education in chocolate history, cocoa science, and related fields, including a new category for teachers.
“Mars and AMERICAN HERITAGE Chocolate have funded chocolate history research and experiences for the past 13 years through this one-of-a-kind grant program. We are thrilled to open the grant opportunity to teachers across the country to bring chocolate's fascinating story, and its educational possibilities, into their classrooms,” commented Kelly Lynch, Director of Brand Marketing and Media.
The grant program, established in 2013, has awarded over 55 grants totaling more than $550,000 to various historical, educational, and community organizations. Past recipients have included The Fort Ticonderoga Association, Conner Prairie Museum, and Montana State University.
According to a press release, the new teacher grant category aims to enhance classroom learning by providing educational resources and a presentation from Mars Chocolate Historian David Borghesani.
AMERICAN HERITAGE Chocolate, a line of artisanal chocolates developed by Mars, plays a key role in this initiative by highlighting chocolate's rich historical narrative, from its Mesoamerican origins to its impact on global culture.
The grant emphasizes projects that explore chocolate’s historical and cultural significance, cocoa science, and educational outreach. The selection process will focus on the educational impact, equity, inclusion, and diversity of the proposals.
The winners of this grant will be announced at the Heritage Chocolate Society’s annual meeting, scheduled for February 19-20, 2025, in Washington, DC, a gathering that spotlights the collective history of chocolate and its cultural and economic influence.
