2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Original Herkimer County Cheese®, as it is celebrating not just its 70th anniversary, but also its award-winning cheeses. The third-generation, family-owned specialty cheese manufacturer plans to celebrate its anniversary with several events throughout the year.
The cheesemaker’s roots extend back to 1949, when Founder Sheldon Basloe and his wife Norma launched a small, mail-order gourmet cheese shop in Herkimer, NY. The company has come a long way since then and continues to innovate, expand, and grow. Its most popular cheeses include aged NY state sharp cheddar wheels and Cheese & Nut Balls and Logs, as well as unique products like Chocolate Cheese Fudge, Pretzel Dip, and Cheese & Nut Variety Circles. Most recently, the company has introduced new flavors to its cheese ball and log line, including Buffalo Blue and Beer Cheese. The cheesemaker’s newest product line is Creamery Reserve™, a premium, spreadable NY cheddar available in Cheddar, Buffalo Blue, and Spicy Tomato flavors.
Winning awards for its spectacular cheeses is par for the course for Herkimer County Cheese—most recently snagging the bronze medal in the Cold Pack Cheese category at the 2019 US Championship Cheese Contest for its flagship product, CHUTTER®. The company’s CHUTTER cheese is a mild cheddar spread known for its rich, buttery flavor and creamy smooth spreadability—it rose to fame in the 1980s when it was sold at Hickory Farms kiosks and has held a cult following ever since. The cheese has numerous applications beyond the humble cracker, and can be used to make everything from fondue to no-bake cheesecake, grilled cheese, and more.
Congratulations on 70 years of being cheesier than a dad joke!
