There’s only one characteristic I expect my ice cream to have, and that’s deliciousness. Alden’s Organic knows a thing or two about high-quality, flavorful ice cream, which is why when the company’s team reached out to let us know about a new line, we here at Deli Market News were already a little bit in love.
If you happened to find yourself in San Francisco weekends ago at the Winter Fancy Food Show, you might have stopped by the Alden’s Organic booth to try its new Dairy Free line. I was one of many in the constant crowd around the company’s booth, joining in the choir of incredulous voices exclaiming, “This is dairy free!?!”—a question Joelle Simmons, SVP of Sales and Marketing, and Kim Berry, Brand Director, haven’t stopped hearing since unveiling the Dairy Free line…and it hasn’t even hit shelves yet!
“So far, response has been amazing, and consumers haven’t even seen the Dairy Free line yet,” Kim shared with me when we chatted ahead of WFFS 2020. “Every person we’ve sampled the flavors with couldn’t believe it was a dairy free line, and that’s because we worked really hard to create a dairy free frozen dessert base with a great texture that would allow us to make high-quality organic ingredients the dominate notes.”
Joelle jumped in to explain that Alden’s Organic actually went through quite a few renditions of this base in order to make it just right.
“After countless attempts—29 to be exact—we finally perfected a blend of brown rice, oat flour, coconut oil, and pea protein,” Joelle revealed. “We put in a lot of work to develop the balance and deliver on a texture that was smooth and creamy and that didn’t sacrifice flavor. The result is an exciting and unique line with a range of flavors that will spark a fun time.”
These flavors include the likes of Muddy Brownie, Vanilla Bean, Double Strawberry, Freckled Mint Chip, Peanut Butter Chip, Cookie Crumble, and Caramel Almond Crunch—which is already a stand-out. All the flavors have real ingredients, like fresh, whole strawberries in Double Strawberry. And, like many of Alden’s Organic goodies, each flavor is certified organic, meaning it is also non-GMO—a key point of differentiation that the Alden’s team is committed to making. In addition to its traditional ice cream format, Alden’s Organic is also debuting two Round Sammie flavors: a Vanilla Bean and a Caramel Drizzle.
“The timing of the new line’s launch is perfect,” Kim continued. “We believe U.S. consumers are interested in plant-based foods, whether they prescribe to a plant-based diet or not. For us, adding dairy free options to our product lineup means that we now have something for everyone in the family and for all eating occasions. Whatever a consumer is craving, or requiring, we have exactly what they’re looking for.”
An excellent selling point if I’ve ever heard one—and one that Joelle disclosed is working well with a few big-name retailers.
“We have not had one single retailer say no to this product launch, which is a first,” Joelle said. “We all win if we get more consumers into the frozen dessert category, and we at Alden’s Organic think our Dairy Free line will be successful in introducing many consumers to both the plant-based category and to Alden’s. This will make the Dairy Free line one that retailers can sell confidently, knowing that it can help grow the dairy-free subsegment and grow the frozen dessert category as a whole.”
While that goal may seem lofty to some, there’s no doubt in my mind that the Alden’s Organic team can accomplish this. I mean, have you had a spoonful of the Dairy Free flavors? I have, and it’s all I need to know to be able to confidently say that the frozen desserts aisle will soon be synonymous with the Alden’s Organic name. In the meantime, Deli Market News will continue to report on all the exciting industry leaders shaking up classic categories.
