Accomplishments in sustainability are constantly making the headlines in our industry, and for good reason. Grupo Bimbo and Bimbo Bakeries USA are the latest to capture attention for its recent accolade, announcing the companies have earned the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification for 18 of their facilities.
“Sustainability is core to Bimbo Bakeries USA’s Purpose of Nourishing a Better World, and we have an obligation to preserve our planet for future generations,” said Ramon Rivera, Senior Vice President of Operations, Bimbo Bakeries USA. “We’re incredibly proud of our longstanding relationship with the EPA and truly appreciate receiving ongoing recognition from them for our growing number of efficient ENERGY STAR facilities.”
This coveted recognition marks the seventh consecutive award for several of these facilities, a press release noted. To achieve this feat, Bimbo Bakeries USA improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across its entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its plants.
In addition to the certification, two of the company’s bakeries achieved the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry, the release explained. The company’s Atlanta, Georgia, and Kent, Washington, facilities have achieved the Challenge’s goal to reduce their energy intensity by 10 percent within five years, with the Atlanta bakery reducing its energy intensity by 11 percent, and the Kent bakery by 18 percent, within three years.
“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment,” said Cindy Jacobs, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial and Industrial Branch and the Branch Chief of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “From the boiler room to the boardroom, organizations are leading the way by making their operations more efficient and earning EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification.”
